Scrum.org Certification Programs

A Credible Standard

  • Grounded in the Scrum Body Of Knowledge written by Scrum co-creators Schwaber and Sutherland. The materials on which Scrum.org certifications are based are available for free in over 30 languages on Scrum.org. These materials are invaluable to those studying for certification.
  • From the founder of the first Scrum certification program. Before founding Scrum.org, Ken Schwaber created the Certified Scrum Master program and founded the Scrum Alliance. Scrum.org was established to address weaknesses that had emerged with this program. For more information, click here.

A Rigorous Examination

  • Strengthened by a minimum score required for certification. Unlike other Scrum certifications that require only class attendance, Scrum.org certification requires a minimum score on an online assessment. This gives Scrum.org certification teeth and ensures that it has true value in the marketplace.
  • Built with formal and informal input from the Scrum community. Our assessment exams are developed by Scrum thought leaders with formal input from a wide range of industry experts. We collect informal input from the larger Scrum community through large-scale beta testing and our online discussion boards.
  • Validated through ongoing monitoring of assessment results. We perform extensive statistical analysis of the results of our certification exams to ensure the integrity of our assessment instruments.

A Supporting Educational Infrastructure

  • Required class attendance only for newer certification programs. As a matter of principle, Scrum.org does not believe that classroom attendance is the only way to acquire knowledge of Scrum. For this reason, we grant certification to those who pass our Professional Scrum Master I and II assessment exams even if they have not taken any Scrum classes -- let alone our Scrum classes.
  • Classes delivered by the most qualified instructors. Scrum.org classes are taught by a select handful of instructors who have passed a parallel certification program for trainers. Instructors must maintain satisfactory feedback ratings and attendee assessment scores to continue delivering Scrum.org courses.
  • Defined curriculum for each class. To ensure the quality of Scrum.org instruction, Scrum.org works with content development partners to create standard curriculum for each class. Instructors bringing their own expertise and experience to bear only to enrich the defined core of the course. Our defined curriculum ensures that students are adequately prepared for assessments and successful in achieving certification.

Three Certification Programs

  • Professional Scrum Master I and II. Professional Scrum Master I (Fundamental) and II (Intermediate) certification indicates how well individuals understand the roles, rules, artifacts, and time-boxes that bind together the Scrum framework. The fee for PSM I is $100, and the fee for PSM II is $500; a minimum score of 85% is required for both levels. PSM I and II certification can be achieved solely by taking the Scrum.org online assessments; attending the associated Professional Scrum Master course is neither necessary nor sufficient for certification.
  • Professional Scrum Developer .NET and Java. Professional Scrum Developer certification is at present available only to those who attend Professional Scrum Developer courses. The price for access to the assessment exam is included in the price for the course; a score of 90% is required for certification. After the course has been offered for one to two years, the Scrum Developer Guide will be formally incorporated into the Scrum Body of Knowledge and certification will be made available to those who pass an assessment but have not taken a course.
  • Professional Scrum Product Owner I and II. Professional Scrum Product Owner certifications are available to those who have attended a Professional Scrum Product Owner course. The Professional Scrum Product Owner I (fundamental) Assessment is included in the course price, and the Professional Scrum Product Owner II (intermediate) Assessment fee is $500; 85% or higher is the required score for certification under both assessments. The Professional Scrum Product Owner Assessments will be available to the public and anyone, including those who have not taken a course, once the Professional Scrum Product Owner Guide has been formalized.
